Why Electric Vehicles Are Ideal for Off-Road Adventures

Improved range and an ever-expanding network of charging stations have significantly broadened the horizons for electric vehicle enthusiasts. As off-roading grows in popularity, Roger Wallgren, Head of Vehicle Dynamics at Polestar, shares why the Polestar 3 is an excellent companion for exploring less-traveled paths.

In recent years, overlanding and off-roading have captivated many adventurers. The appeal of packing up your car, heading into the wilderness, and finding tranquility away from the city’s hustle is undeniable.

Although the overlanding scene is currently dominated by combustion vehicles, the shift towards electric off-roaders is inevitable. The idea of reaching your secluded spot without emitting pollutants is certainly more appealing.

But how soon can you embark on a silent adventure with a Polestar 3? According to Roger Wallgren, it’s a real possibility with the upcoming Polestar 3. “It [the Polestar 3] wasn’t intended for off-road use more than any other SUV on the market.

But it does lend itself to it,” says Wallgren. The Polestar 3 boasts good ground clearance, individual wheel power distribution, ample space, and substantial torque, making it well-suited for off-road escapades.

Built for All Occasions

With a starting ground clearance of 200mm, the Polestar 3 performs adequately off-road. However, its approach angles might not be ideal for steep slopes.

Wallgren suggests raising the suspension to its full 250mm ground clearance for better performance. “If you want to get the best out of the suspension, raise it to its full 250mm ground clearance, as the approach angles become much steeper. For anything off-road, suspension is a good starting point,” he explains.

Electric vehicles have an advantage with a low center of gravity. This characteristic is crucial for maintaining stability on rough terrain. The Polestar 3’s battery placement ensures a low center of gravity, akin to the Polestar One. “When you’re on a hill or driving sideways at an angle, the risk of tipping over is very low. It’s like you’re sitting in a sports car,” Wallgren notes.

Unique Torque Delivery

The Polestar 3 not only stands tall with a low center of gravity but also excels in power delivery. Polestar vehicles are known for their powerful performance, and the Polestar 3 is no exception.

Wallgren highlights the smooth and controllable torque offered by the Polestar 3’s one-pedal drive system, which is essential for off-roading. “With one pedal drive, you have smooth, controllable torque at your fingertips at all times. There’s little to no drama requesting the torque to move the vehicle forward, and you get smooth control.”

Moreover, the Polestar 3 features advanced technology to ensure power is delivered precisely where needed. Unlike traditional internal combustion engine cars that rely on differentials, the Polestar 3 uses clutches to control torque individually for each wheel.

“What we’ve done is replaced a differential with a clutch on each side that gives you the opportunity to control the torque individually for each wheel, so the tyre doesn’t slip in the first place,” Wallgren explains.

This system allows the Polestar 3 to detect when a wheel has low or no grip and adjust the torque accordingly, preventing unnecessary wheel spin and ensuring optimal traction.

Ready for Adventure

The attributes that define a Polestar vehicle also enhance its off-road capabilities. The low center of gravity provides excellent handling, precise power distribution ensures thrilling performance, and adjustable suspension improves efficiency. While the Polestar 3 is not a specialized off-roader yet, it is more capable than one might expect.

With a Polestar 3, you can venture further than you imagined, enjoying a quiet, quick, and safe journey. The Polestar 3 is prepared to support your adventures, ensuring you can explore the roads less traveled with confidence and ease.
