Volkswagen has outlined ambitious plans for the future of its core brand, including the introduction of an entry-level electric model priced around €20,000.
At a works meeting in Wolfsburg, CEO Thomas Schäfer emphasized Volkswagen’s commitment to making e-mobility accessible to all, positioning the company as a leader in affordable electric vehicles. The show car debut is set for March, with the production model launching in 2027.
This new model will be part of Volkswagen’s electric small car family, alongside the ID.2all, which is expected to hit dealerships in 2026 for under €25,000. Built on the latest MEB platform, these models are key to Volkswagen’s strategy for low-cost electric mobility.

Since launching the ID. family in 2019, Volkswagen has sold over 1.35 million electric vehicles, including 500,000 ID.3s. In 2023 alone, 383,100 all-electric units were sold.
Wolfsburg: The Heart of Volkswagen’s Electric Future
Schäfer reaffirmed that Wolfsburg remains central to Volkswagen’s innovation and production. With Golf production moving to Mexico, space is being created for next-generation electric vehicles, including the future electric Golf and T-Roc on the new SSP platform.
This highly scalable, fully digitalized Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) will serve as a foundation for Volkswagen’s all-electric compact class.

Volkswagen’s “Triple A” Strategy: Accelerate, Attack, Achieve
Volkswagen’s “Future Volkswagen” agreement, finalized in December 2024, sets a roadmap for economic stability, job security, and technology leadership in sustainable mobility. The three-stage strategy includes:
- Catch up: Strengthen competitiveness by optimizing costs and expanding the model portfolio.
- Attack: Introduce nine new models by 2027, including the ID.2all and the €20,000 electric car.
- Lead: Establish Volkswagen as the global leader in high-tech, volume electric mobility.
Schäfer described the affordable European-built electric car as “the Champions League of automotive engineering”, reinforcing Volkswagen’s ambition to lead the global electric vehicle market.
