Volkswagen R is set to unveil its most powerful Golf models this month: the new Golf R and the new Golf R Variant. Alongside exceptional performance, these new models are visually impressive, featuring the striking 19-inch Warmenau forged wheel as an optional enhancement.

A Harmony of Stability, Appearance, and Lightweight Construction

The innovative Warmenau forged wheel, a product of collaboration between Volkswagen R and Volkswagen Design, will be available as an option for all new Golf R models. Each wheel rim weighs a mere eight kilograms, making them approximately 20 percent lighter than comparable alloy wheels.

This reduction in unsprung mass contributes to improved handling. Volkswagen designer Ranbir Kalha highlights the challenge of achieving the ambitious weight target while maintaining structural stability. The process involved months of iterations and simulations to find the optimal balance between strength and weight.

Design for Enhanced Performance

The wheel rim design features ten overlapping rectangles, crafted to maximize visual size. This design also boasts a large opening ratio of 71 percent, which enhances brake cooling and reduces thermal stress, particularly on racetracks. Kalha notes that the design aims to make the wheels look as large as possible, contributing to the car’s sporty aesthetic and performance.

Inspired by Volkswagen R’s Heritage

Named after Volkswagen R’s headquarters in Warmenau, near Wolfsburg, the Warmenau wheel rim is available in black or dark grey with a diamond-cut finish, paired with 235/35 tires. The design draws inspiration from the wheels of the early Golf R32 models, blending heritage with modern performance.

Volkswagen R: A Legacy of Performance

Volkswagen R, the brand’s premium performance division, focuses on producing the sportiest vehicles in the lineup. In 2023, Volkswagen R achieved a record year with over 35,000 vehicles produced, adding to the more than 300,000 R models delivered since 2002. As the brand evolves, it plans to transition its portfolio towards all-electric R models by 2030, aligning with its pillars of performance, design, innovation, and quality. Founded in 2002 as Volkswagen Individual GmbH, Volkswagen R became a separate business unit within the Volkswagen brand in 2020. The R continues to symbolize a passion for motorsport and racing.

World Premiere

The new Golf R models, available as both fastback and estate variants, along with the Warmenau performance wheel rim, will make their world premiere on June 26. This event will showcase the latest advancements and the continuing legacy of Volkswagen’s commitment to performance and innovation.
