Volkswagen has achieved significant progress in its renewable energy initiatives across Europe, supporting 26 green power projects in nine countries since 2021. These projects have fed approximately 3 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity into the grid, equivalent to the energy needs of 800,000 households annually.
This initiative plays a vital role in decarbonization, reducing the carbon footprint of Volkswagen’s ID. electric models.

Andreas Walingen, Volkswagen’s CSO, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding renewable energy to enable ID. owners to operate their vehicles in a net carbon-neutral way.
Larger projects include a solar park in Portugal generating 60 GWh annually and a Swedish wind farm producing over 1,000 GWh yearly. Volkswagen’s support spans 18 photovoltaic plants and eight wind farms, with energy attribute certificates confirming renewable energy origins.
In 2024, these projects generated 1.1 TWh of green power—enough to cover the electricity needs of the ID. fleet on European roads not already powered by renewable sources. Volkswagen aims to reduce reliance on “grey” electricity, which currently accounts for 40% of EV charging, shifting toward carbon-neutral solutions over a 10-year period.
Life cycle analyses (LCA) demonstrate the benefits of green charging. An ID.4 Pro charged solely using the EU green electricity mix achieves a 50% lower carbon footprint over 200,000 kilometers compared to a diesel counterpart. Even with initial production emissions, an ID.4 Pro surpasses diesel’s carbon efficiency after 66,000 km of use when charged with green power.
Volkswagen supports ID. drivers with access to over 750,000 charging points across Europe, including the IONITY rapid charging network powered by renewables. Its Elli brand introduced a dynamic energy tariff, Volkswagen Naturstrom Flex, in 2024, allowing customers to charge at lower market rates, cutting costs by up to 40% with smart charging solutions.
Volkswagen’s efforts align with its decarbonization goals, solidifying its role as a leader in sustainable mobility and renewable energy integration.
