As part of its ‘In China, for China’ strategy, Volkswagen is honing its product lineup to better align with the preferences of its Chinese customers. The carmaker has unveiled the first model from a new sub-brand: the ID. UNYX. This E-SUV coupé is distinguished by its progressive design, a smart human-machine interface (HMI) featuring a customizable 3D avatar, and a range exceeding 600 kilometers. Tailored specifically for the Chinese market, the ID. UNYX represents the latest in Volkswagen’s series of intelligently networked vehicles. Aimed at young urbanites, the ID. UNYX sub-brand will be supported by 40 exclusive stores across 20 cities, offering immersive experiences through virtual and augmented reality technologies.
Volkswagen Brand China’s CEO, Stefan Mecha, described the ID. UNYX as an avant-garde addition to their electric ID. lineup in China.

He emphasized that the new model combines confident, forward-thinking design with sustainable electric propulsion and a cutting-edge user experience, making it a perfect fit for modern, lifestyle-oriented consumers. The intelligently networked features of the ID. UNYX are key to attracting and retaining young customers for Volkswagen.
Volkswagen plans to expand the ID. UNYX sub-brand with four additional models by 2026, including both SUVs and saloons. This expansion is part of Volkswagen’s broader strategy for China, which involves introducing 34 new models by 2030 to solidify its position as the leading international brand in the Chinese market. The plan includes 16 new electric ID. models, 12 new combustion engine models, and six new plug-in hybrids. These efforts are bolstered by Volkswagen’s longstanding partnerships with SAIC Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen, as well as the new Volkswagen Smart E-Mobility Hub.
The ID. UNYX was developed at Volkswagen’s new innovation and development center in Hefei, eastern China, which focuses exclusively on next-generation smart electric vehicles for the local market. Production of the ID. UNYX also takes place in Hefei at one of Volkswagen Group’s most advanced electric vehicle plants.
A standout feature of the ID. UNYX is its innovative HMI, which includes an AI-based 3D avatar. This avatar, customizable through an app, can synchronize with the vehicle’s HMI and offer conversational interactions with the driver, enhancing the personalized driving experience.
The ID. UNYX boasts impressive technical specifications, with its entry-level model powered by a 210 kW (286 PS) electric motor on the rear axle, fueled by a 77 kWh battery. This setup provides a range of up to 621 kilometers according to the China Light-Duty Test Cycle (CLTC) standard. Additionally, an all-wheel-drive version with two electric motors and a combined output of 250 kW (340 PS) will also be available.
Visually, the ID. UNYX is marked by its powerful avant-garde design. Distinctive features include a gold-colored Volkswagen badge on the front and golden vehicle lettering, symbols of quality, reliability, and safety in China. The vehicle’s front showcases the LED matrix headlights with a horizontal LED strip and a prominent powerdome. The sleek silhouette is accentuated by a sharply cut character line rising towards the rear, culminating in a sporty coupé-style rear with 3D LED tail lights and illuminated horizontal strips. The intricate LED elements create a floating light effect, perfectly complementing the vehicle’s progressive design.
