Subaru Forester Earns Top Rating in IIHS Rear Crash Prevention Test

Subaru Forester achieves highest IIHS rating for rear crash prevention, showcasing advanced safety features and commitment to occupant and pedestrian protection.

Subaru of America, Inc. announced today that the 2024 Subaru Forester has received the highest possible rating of “Superior” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in their latest rear crash prevention test for small SUVs. Among the eight small SUVs evaluated, the Forester was one of only four to achieve this top rating.

Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer of Subaru of America, Inc., emphasized the brand’s commitment to safety, stating, “Safety is at the heart of every Subaru vehicle, and I’m proud our Forester excelled in this test by the IIHS. Our vehicles are designed to not only keep occupants and nearby pedestrians safe but also to stay on the road longer and avoid costly repairs for our owners.”

The IIHS began testing rear crash prevention systems in 2018, using a rating scale of “Basic,” “Advanced,” and “Superior.” Vehicles equipped solely with parking sensors and rear cross-traffic alerts can earn a Basic rating. Those with rear automatic emergency braking (AEB) are tested on how well their systems perform in various scenarios, including different approach angles and collisions with a bollard, representing a pole or garage pillar. The evaluation consists of 24 test runs at 4 mph, with scoring based on the system’s ability to avoid the target or reduce speed to below 1 mph before impact.

David Aylor, Vice President of Active Safety at IIHS, explained the test’s purpose: “The rear AEB evaluation is designed to test how well these systems prevent the most common backing crashes. These are challenging scenarios in which a pole or another vehicle is behind you and off to the side. Meanwhile, you are backing up and sometimes turning at the same time.”

The 2024 Subaru Forester stands out with its array of standard and available safety features, including EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System, and Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB). The RAB system uses sonar sensors to detect obstacles behind the vehicle and can apply the brakes to prevent or minimize collisions.

In addition to its safety features, the Subaru Forester offers an optimal blend of SUV capability and car-like handling, featuring standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Active Torque Vectoring, and Vehicle Dynamics Control. With 8.7 inches of ground clearance (9.2 inches for the Forester Wilderness), the Forester provides ease of entry for both front and rear passengers while maintaining excellent off-road capability. The 2024 Forester is available at Subaru retailers nationwide.
