Sir Stirling Moss’ modest old family runaround is for sale for £12,000.
The Mercedes 500SL was bought by the F1 legend in 1992 when he was 63-years-old.
The late race great owned the saloon for four years.
He kept it fully serviced and didn’t have any prangs in it.
The silver Merc has now done 89,000 miles.
The 155mph motor can do 0-60mph in 6.1 seconds – which was fairly nippy at the time.
It is now being sold at auction by H&H Classics at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, Cambridgeshire, on 19 June.
The guide price is £10,000 to £12,000.
It comes complete with a letter from Sir Stirling – who died in 2020 aged 90.
It reads: “This is to confirm that the above vehicle was until February 1996 my personal car.
“The car was ordered by me, from Mercedes Benz in Germany.
“In August 1992, I collected the car from Bremen and drove it back to the UK.
“During the period I owned the car, all servicing for it was arranged through Mercedes’ Head Office in Milton Keynes.
“The car did not suffer accidental damage whilst in my keeping.”
A H&H Classics spokesperson said: “A 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL ordered new by Sir Stirling Moss OBE returns to the open market.
“When it goes under the hammer at H&H’s Duxford sale on 19 June, with an estimate of just £10,000 – £12,000.
James McWilliam, senior specialist, H&H Classics, said: “Any car with a connection to the racing great is sure to fire up widespread interest, and this 500SL is certainly expected to do that.
“As well as being a fantastic motor car in its own right, the car’s provenance is indisputable thanks to an ownership confirmation letter and a good history file which confirms careful ownership over the years.
“This fantastic combination means that we do expect significant interest in this wonderful piece of Sir Stirling’s history.”
Sir Stirling won 212 of the 529 races he was in including 16 Grand Prix races.
He is regarded as the greatest driver never to be an F1 champ, as reported by Luxury Auto News.
