The R3’s exterior and interior designs are inviting and iconic, showcasing the scalability of Rivian’s brand across different vehicle forms while maintaining immediate recognizability.
Both R2 and R3 will feature two battery sizes. The larger pack will provide over 300 miles of range on a single charge and offer 0-60 mph acceleration in under 3 seconds in the quickest configuration.
The starting price for R2 is expected to be around $45,000, while the R3 will be priced below R2, making Rivian vehicles more accessible. Rivian’s development teams have focused intensely on cost efficiency through manufacturing, design innovation, and a robust supply chain. The R2 is available for reservation in the U.S. for $100, with deliveries beginning in the first half of 2026. R3 and R3X deliveries will follow, ensuring a smooth launch and ramp-up of R2 – a lesson learned from the simultaneous launch of the R1T, R1S, and EDV. R2, R3, and R3X will be available internationally after their North American launch.
“I’ve never been more excited to launch new products,” said Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe. “R2 and R3 embody Rivian’s performance, capability, and usability at a price point that makes them accessible to many. Our teams are focused on driving innovation into our product features and manufacturing approach to achieve dramatically lower costs. R2 offers buyers in the $45,000 range a choice with a well-developed technology platform bursting with personality. I can’t wait to get these to customers.”
All-New Platform
The R2 and R3 are built on a new midsize vehicle platform designed for performance, range, and cost efficiency. This platform consolidates and eliminates parts through intelligent design, using high-pressure die castings, a structural battery unit where the pack’s top also serves as the floor, and simplified closure systems. R2 and R3 also utilize Rivian’s drive unit platform and internally developed network architecture, computer topology, and software stack.
R2 and R3 Highlights
Three Motor Variants: The R2 and R3 will offer Single-Motor (RWD), Dual-Motor (AWD), and Tri-Motor configurations, with the quickest setup achieving 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds.
Structural Battery: An all-new 4695 cell improves energy density and output, delivering over 300 miles of range on a single charge for both models.
Fast Charging: Compatible with DC fast charging via both NACS (native) and CCS (with adapter), charging from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes.
Self Driving: Enhanced autonomous capabilities will be provided by Rivian’s new perception stack, featuring 11 cameras, five radars, and a powerful compute platform.
Continuous Improvement: Rivian’s network architecture, computer topology, and full software platform enable frequent updates, offering extensive room for feature growth.
Intentional Design
R2 and R3 showcase Rivian’s design language adapted to different vehicle sizes and forms.
“Our R1 flagship vehicles were our introduction to the world,” said Rivian Chief Design Officer Jeff Hammoud. “With R2 and R3, our goal is to stay true to Rivian’s attributes while making our products accessible to more people. We designed R2 by balancing form with function, building on our inviting and iconic design language.”
R2’s Design Priorities
Adventure: R2’s four passenger windows and powered rear glass fully drop, while the powered rear quarter windows vent, creating an open-air driving experience. The R3’s hatch-style design maximizes space while maintaining a sporty silhouette.
Space: With a focus on rear passenger legroom, long trips in R2 and R3 are comfortable. Folding seats, ample front and rear trunks, and additional interior storage ensure space for all passengers and gear.
Refined Touches: Rivian’s new steering wheel with integrated haptic control dials keeps drivers focused. Durable, sustainable materials ensure easy cleaning.

Rivian plans to start R2 production in Normal, Illinois, reducing the capital required for its launch. This approach leverages existing manufacturing and operations teams, expanding site capacity to 215,000 units per year. Rivian’s Georgia plant remains key to scaling R2 and R3 production, with construction resuming later to focus on the efficient launch of R2 in Normal, Illinois.
Summary
Rivian’s approach will save an estimated $2.25 billion compared to launching R2 production in Georgia, reducing capital expenditures, product development investment, and supplier sourcing costs. With sufficient cash and investments to fund operations through the start of R2 production, Rivian plans to begin R2 production in the first half of 2026, reaching an annual capacity of 215,000 units at the Normal plant.
