While retaining the iconic Rivian exterior, these new versions introduce a zonal electrical architecture and new computing and autonomy platforms. Customers will also find new motor configurations, aesthetic updates, and various trim and tire options.
Rivian CEO and founder RJ Scaringe highlighted the continuous evolution of their flagship models, emphasizing their blend of quality and uncompromising performance. The revamped R1S and R1T push technical boundaries, making them the most capable vehicles Rivian has produced to date.
The new R1 platform now includes a Rivian-designed drive unit available in Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor configurations. The Quad-Motor R1T, for example, not only delivers 1,025 horsepower but also 1,198 lb-ft of torque in Launch Mode. A Rivian-built Dual-Motor variant is also available. These units, fully designed and manufactured in-house, promise enhanced power and performance.
Battery options have been improved with redesigned modules and more efficient packaging, making them easier to manufacture and service. The Large and Max battery packs offer up to an estimated 420 miles of range, while a new lithium iron phosphate-based Standard pack provides an EPA-estimated 270 miles of range.
Efficiency gains extend to a redesigned heat pump-based thermal system, which improves passenger comfort and conserves range. New 22-inch aero wheels and tires reduce drag, enhancing the vehicles’ range capabilities. Additionally, updated suspension and air springs ensure a smooth on-road experience without sacrificing off-road performance.
Technological advancements are a cornerstone of the second-generation R1 vehicles. They feature a completely new electrical architecture and computing platform, reducing the number of ECUs from 17 to 7 and eliminating 1.6 miles of wiring per vehicle.
The new Rivian Autonomy Platform, powered by 11 cameras, five radars, and advanced AI prediction technology, offers superior capabilities. With 360-degree visibility and significantly higher computing power, this system is designed for improved performance in various weather and light conditions.
Standard features include high-resolution camera Blind Spot Monitoring and Highway Assist, with additional capabilities like Lane Change on Command and Enhanced Highway Assist available through the premium Rivian Autonomy Platform+.
Safety features have also been upgraded with new headlights and taillights incorporating Adaptive Drive Beam technology, enhancing driver awareness on dark roads.
The second-generation R1 models introduce new experiential features and design elements. Rivian owners can use digital keys via Apple Wallet or select Google Pixel devices to unlock and start their vehicles and share keys with others. The Rivian Premium Audio system, featuring Dolby Atmos, offers an immersive sound experience, while Connect+ subscription service provides streaming video and access to over 3,000 apps directly on the vehicle’s center display.
Integration with Apple Music allows access to a vast catalog of songs and playlists, enhanced by Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos for a superior listening experience.
Interior enhancements include a Dynamic Glass Roof that can be electronically tinted and a customizable interior lighting system. The user interface has been redesigned using Unreal Engine, offering unique, real-time graphics that reflect Rivian’s adventurous spirit.
Two new premium Ascend trims are available, along with a new Storm Blue exterior paint and blackout trim options.
Rivian’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the design of these vehicles. They achieve a 15% lower lifetime carbon footprint compared to the first-generation models, thanks to improvements in manufacturing efficiencies and material supply chains. The innovative electrical zonal architecture reduces manufacturing costs and parts, cutting CO2 emissions from production by about 50% compared to 2022 models.
Starting at $75,900 for the R1S and $69,900 for the R1T, production is based in Normal, Illinois, with immediate delivery availability. Customers can place orders at www.Rivian.com.
