A Century of Presidential Renaults at the Élysée Palace
The Élysée Palace has long been a witness to the history of the automobile, with the President of the French Republic traditionally using an official Renault vehicle for over a century. This tradition was upheld when President Emmanuel Macron traveled in a Renault Rafale to the traditional military parade on July 14, 2024. The Need for Presidential Comfort and Security
French Presidents require comfortable and spacious vehicles for their frequent travels, even for very short trips. Throughout history, many Renault flagships have served as official cars for the Presidency of the Republic. Some were convertibles for easy public greetings, especially during inaugurations, while others were custom-made extended limousines or SUVs for added comfort. Most of these vehicles have been armored for the past forty years to ensure security.

Renault 40CV (1920s)
In 1920, the Renault 40CV became the official car for Presidents Paul Deschanel, Alexandre Millerand, and Gaston Doumergue. Produced from 1908 to 1928, this luxurious sedan was powered by 6-cylinder engines with up to 9.5 liters of displacement. It was favored by the upper middle class for its racing prestige, and a racing version set a record in the 1926 24 Hours of Montlhéry, covering 4,167.578 km at an average speed of 173.649 km/h.
Renault Reinastella (1931)
The Renault Reinastella, a convertible introduced in 1929, succeeded the 40CV as the official car for Presidents Paul Doumer and Albert Lebrun. Manufactured until 1933, it featured an in-line 8-cylinder engine and luxurious interiors matching its grand exterior dimensions of 5.50 meters in length and over 2.7 tons in weight.
Renault Nerva Grand Sport (1938)
In 1938, the Renault Nerva Grand Sport was specially crafted for President Albert Lebrun. Part of the luxury Stella range, it featured an in-line 8-cylinder engine with a 5.4-liter displacement. This futuristic design allowed the car to reach speeds of up to 145 km/h.
Renault Suprastella (1941)
The Renault Suprastella, intended for high dignitaries, was produced in 1938 and 1939. A special convertible version was delivered in 1942 and later used by General de Gaulle and Presidents Auriol and Coty until 1950. This luxurious sedan was the last Renault with an in-line 8-cylinder engine.
Renault 30 (1981)
In 1981, President François Mitterrand chose the Renault 30, breaking the tradition of Citroën and Peugeot used by his predecessors. This model, presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1975 and marketed until 1983, featured a V6 engine and rich equipment, making it the most aerodynamic French high-end sedan of its time.
Renault 25 Stretched Limousine (1984)
François Mitterrand also used the Renault 25 stretched limousine from 1984, extended by Heuliez by 22.7 cm and armored for his presidential terms. Known for its aerodynamic design and luxurious interior, it featured modern amenities such as automatic air conditioning and electric massaging seats.
Renault Safrane (1992)
The Renault Safrane, unveiled in 1992, served Presidents François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac. This V6-engined model, extended and armored, represented luxury with its leather and wood interior and advanced features like GPS navigation and controlled suspension.
Renault Vel Satis V6 (2008)
In 2008, an armored Renault Vel Satis V6, extended by 25 cm, was delivered to President Nicolas Sarkozy and later used by Emmanuel Macron. Marketed from 2002 to 2009, this model stood out for its modern design and spacious, comfortable interior.
Renault Espace V (2016)
In 2016, an armored Renault Espace V became the official vehicle for President François Hollande and was later used by Emmanuel Macron during his inauguration in 2017. This unique dark blue vehicle combined security with elegance.
Renault Rafale (2024)
On July 14, 2024, the Renault Rafale became the latest official car for President Emmanuel Macron. This model, with specific presidential fittings such as a unique “Bleu Nocturne” body color and tricolor flag decorations, embodies the height of modern French automotive luxury.
