A rare hypercar is up for auction – and it’s one of only 250 ever made. The stunning 2015 VW XL1, presented in sunset red, has been part of the prestigious Volkswagen collection for the last 13 years. It is up for auction with bids starting at £38,750.
Volkswagen introduced the production version of this lightweight two-seater in 2011, offering it in a limited-edition run of just 250 units. The XL1, a diesel-electric hybrid, was developed with the aim of making diesel as green as possible.
Aerodynamics played a crucial role in its design, aiming to minimize air resistance. The car’s ultra-lightweight body is primarily made of carbon fiber with reinforced aluminum parts.

Its unique streamline gives it an exceptionally smooth silhouette, and with its closed wheel arches at the rear and upward-opening doors, the VW XL1 looks like it could have come straight out of a sci-fi movie.
This particular car has only had two owners and has driven 19,950 km. It is powered by an 800cc, two-cylinder diesel engine with 48hp, paired with a 27hp electric motor.
Impressively, the vehicle can achieve an astonishing 100 km per liter, which translates to a staggering 235 mpg, far surpassing the average of 43 mpg for diesel cars. The combined power output is 51 kW.
The final sale will include the original car cover, hubcaps, and charger. The VW XL1 is currently up for auction via SBX Cars, with the fifth and latest bid at £37,500 (€44,000).
