In a surprising turn of events, Porsche has revealed the existence of a 924 Turbo Targa prototype, challenging the long-held belief that a Targa version of the transaxle model series never existed. This revelation marks a significant chapter in Porsche’s storied history of innovation.

As Porsche moved forward with the Turbo version of the four-cylinder transaxle model, the concept of a 924 Turbo Targa was born.

The 924 Turbo, introduced in the 1979 model year, bridged the gap between the base 924 and the 911 SC, offering 170 PS and a top speed of 225 km/h. The Targa concept integrated seamlessly into the 924’s design, maintaining the car’s sleek lines while offering the unique open-air experience associated with Targa models.

Porsche’s engineers made significant modifications to the 2.0-litre EA 831 engine, converting it to a turbocharged unit with an output of 170 PS at 5,500 rpm. The KKK turbocharger, positioned close to the exhaust manifold, and a series of adaptations to the ignition, injection system, and fuel pumps, resulted in a power increase of 36 percent per litre.

Externally, the 924 Turbo was distinguishable by additional NACA ducts in the bonnet, 15-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, and a black polyurethane rear spoiler.

The Targa prototype, however, remained almost indistinguishable from the standard model, thanks to its subtle design. The roof section was manually removable, blending harmoniously with the car’s overall aesthetics.

Despite the promising development, the project was halted on February 29, 1980. High development and tooling costs, coupled with concerns about the body’s rigidity, led to its discontinuation. However, the knowledge gained from the 924 Targa was later applied to the 944 convertible project, showcasing Porsche’s continuous innovation.

The 924 Turbo Targa prototype, now part of the Porsche Museum collection, serves as a fascinating glimpse into what could have been a significant addition to Porsche’s Targa lineage.
