Porsche has completely reimagined its production process at the Leipzig plant to incorporate the all-electric Macan alongside gasoline and hybrid models on the same assembly line.

Central to this transformation is the “marriage” stage, where the vehicle body is joined with its chassis. This process has been significantly redesigned to handle the complexity of electric vehicles, with the addition of new tools, robots, and advanced technologies.

The shift was driven by the decision in 2018 to produce the electric Macan at Leipzig. This required extending the marriage process from four to nine stations and adding six robots to handle the increased work involved in screwing together 50 components in the electric model—compared to 20 for gasoline and hybrid versions.

Innovative solutions, such as a new automatic screw-loading system and autonomous camera checks for battery assembly, were implemented to ensure seamless integration across the plant’s workflows.

The facility now produces 600 Macan and Panamera vehicles daily, with each car moving through 4,000 work steps and involving 5,000 parts.

Porsche’s meticulous “pearl necklace” production approach ensures smooth coordination across all departments, allowing for efficient assembly of the three drive types with precision and minimal delays.
