Porsche is celebrating 25 years of the 911 GT3, a model that revolutionized the sports car landscape. First unveiled in 1999 at the Geneva International Motor Show, the puristic 911 GT3 (996) set new benchmarks for road-legal motorsport performance.

Among its early admirers is Walter Röhrl, two-time World Rally Champion and Porsche brand ambassador, who recently reunited with his former company car—a flawless Arctic Silver Metallic 911 GT3 with Clubsport package.

“This feels like a journey through time,” said Röhrl, reminiscing about the car that once served as his daily driver. Röhrl, now 77, marveled at the GT3’s raw simplicity and unparalleled driving experience, even jokingly suggesting a few laps around the track.

A Car Steeped in Motorsport DNA

Designed for enthusiasts who value pure driving, the GT3 combined a water-cooled naturally aspirated engine with a lightweight design and racing features. Producing 360 PS, it outshone the standard 996 Carrera with a stiffer chassis, aerodynamic enhancements, and motorsport-ready components like Nomex bucket seats, a fixed roll cage, and a six-point harness. A unique single mass flywheel added to its racing pedigree, delivering quicker engine response and a characteristic idle rattling sound.

The GT3 was also a record-breaker, becoming the first street-legal 911 to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in under eight minutes—achieving a time of 7:56 minutes with Röhrl at the wheel.

The GT3 Legacy Lives On

The first 911 GT3 has found a home with FL8WERK, a group of Porsche enthusiasts based near Flacht, Germany. Their private collection includes seven first-generation GT3 models, each lovingly preserved and presented in rare colors. Timo Conrad, cofounder of FL8WERK and the car’s current owner, recalls the serendipitous discovery of its history. “Finding out it was Röhrl’s car felt like unearthing a treasure.”

FL8WERK celebrates the GT3’s blend of everyday usability and track performance. “It’s the perfect balance,” said Conrad. Fellow enthusiast Cleto Di Paolo added, “The direct, unfiltered driving experience is what makes the first GT3 so special.”

A Quarter Century of Innovation

The GT3’s debut marked the beginning of Porsche’s GT line, blending cutting-edge motorsport engineering with road-ready practicality. To this day, each generation builds on the legacy of unadulterated driving thrills.

For Walter Röhrl, the appeal of the GT3 remains timeless. Starting the engine once again, he laughed as the flywheel rattled to life. “This car was a sensation back then, and it still is today.”
