A unique fusion of automotive excellence and surfing culture has emerged from the Hel peninsula in Poland, where a passionate surfing community has created the Porsche 928 Surfari. This unlikely project, born from the dreams of a father-son duo, epitomizes the seamless blend of a powerful V8 engine with off-road capabilities, tailored for the ultimate beach and surf experience.
The journey began with Tadeusz Elwart, manager of the Chałupy 6 campsite and founder of the Hel Riders festival, who grew up immersed in both Porsche enthusiasm and a coastal lifestyle. The idea of the 928 Surfari was conceived during the dynamic growth of the Hel Riders festival, aiming to transform a classic Porsche into a surf-ready beach crawler.

Despite the challenging brief, the Hel Riders team, led by engineer and rally driver Tomasz Staniszewski, embraced the project with enthusiasm. Staniszewski, fresh from his success in the Classic Dakar Rally with a self-built Porsche 924, tackled the technical obstacles head-on. His expertise in modifying the gearbox, differential, and suspension was crucial in converting the 928 into a robust off-road vehicle capable of tackling sandy terrains.
The design of the Surfari was entrusted to the Lange & Lange brothers, local talents who have been integral to the Chałupy 6 community for decades. Their work ensured that the vehicle not only performed impeccably but also captured the spirit of the surfing lifestyle.
After debuting at the Hel Riders festival, the 928 Surfari embarked on a road trip, joining a convoy to Sylt, Germany, for the Petro-Surf air-cooled Porsche festival, and then to the island of Rømø in Denmark. These locations provided the perfect backdrop to showcase the car’s capabilities and its connection to the natural beach environment.
