Inspiration is the lifeblood of innovation, but at Polestar, imitation is firmly off the table. For designers Maria Uggla and Komal Singh, inspiration knows no bounds, often drawn from the fashion world and even each other.

Their latest project, the interior of the Polestar 4—a cutting-edge electric SUV coupé—illustrates this creativity. With a sloped rear design and no rear window, the Polestar 4 is engineered for both performance and interior space, featuring four interior themes.

One standout is the Tailored Knit upholstery, influenced by the footwear industry and developed in collaboration with The Swedish School of Textiles in Borås.

Maria, Polestar’s Head of Color and Material, brings decades of experience in Color, Materials, and Finish (CMF) design, while Komal, a Design Expert in Color and Material, contributes a passion for minimalist, purposeful design inspired by her diverse background. Together, they form a dynamic duo, constantly seeking fresh inspiration from industries beyond automotive, particularly fashion.

However, imitation is not part of their process. “We’re allergic to copying,” Maria asserts, emphasizing the importance of originality. Instead, they look to fashion for broader societal trends, using them as a barometer for their own innovative direction.

Komal notes that while fashion trends can be fleeting, the underlying currents provide valuable insight, helping them set their own trends rather than following others.

Creating from scratch is a principle both designers hold dear. For them, design is not about quick fixes or borrowing ideas—it’s about solving real needs and adding value through thoughtful, deliberate work.

As Komal puts it, true innovation takes time and should not be rushed. Maria agrees, stressing that good design requires rigorous effort, diverse perspectives, and deep intellectual engagement.

In the world of Polestar, design is a process of careful creation, rooted in inspiration and marked by a steadfast commitment to originality and purpose.
