Opel marks the 50th anniversary of the Kadett City, the compact hatchback that debuted in 1975 and set new standards in versatility and design.
Launched as a variant of the Kadett C, the Kadett City was engineered with a large rear hatch and compact 3.90-meter body, offering practical space for young families and urban drivers.

Its sporty design, easy loadability, and optional gas-spring-assisted tailgate made it a standout in the 1970s.

Originally available with a range of four-cylinder engines and later with a 75 hp 1.6-litre unit, the Kadett City blended performance and practicality. By 1979, it marked the end of Opel’s rear-wheel drive era in the compact segment, paving the way for the front-wheel drive Kadett D.

Today, Opel continues that legacy with the Astra, produced in Rüsselsheim. The Astra combines sleek styling, advanced features like Intelli-Lux Pixel headlights, and unmatched powertrain variety.

Available as a fully electric model, plug-in hybrid, 48V hybrid, or efficient petrol variant, the Astra offers modern solutions for every lifestyle—keeping alive the spirit of innovation and versatility that began with the Kadett City.
