Shanghai, China, June 25, 2024—NIO has released its 2023 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report, detailing significant advancements in sustainable development across various initiatives, including A Blue Sky, Superior Products, Sustainable Value Chain, Employee Care, and Charitable Actions.
Promoting Low-Carbon Operations for a Blue Sky
NIO is committed to carbon reduction in the smart electric vehicle industry, striving to achieve its vision of “Blue Sky Coming.” On March 25, 2023, NIO joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), becoming the first Chinese new energy vehicle company to do so. Additionally, NIO was the first Chinese automaker to participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) questionnaire.
During the reporting period, NIO implemented a small-scale closed-loop aluminum recycling pilot for 200 vehicles and promoted resource recycling programs such as the Battery Passport and BLUE SKY LAB. The company achieved 98% usage of recyclable and shareable green packaging in vehicle transportation.

In 2023, NIO consumed 55,495.53 MWh of renewable electricity, marking a 283.7% year-on-year increase. The total installed photovoltaic capacity at NIO’s manufacturing centers reached 67.63 MW. NIO’s green certifications include LEED Gold for F2 and E1 factories and Three-Star Chinese Green Building certifications for E0 and NIO House | NeoPark in Hefei.
Providing Superior Products
NIO invested RMB 13.43 billion in R&D in 2023, securing 8,478 patents globally. The company’s EC6 and ET5 models received top safety ratings from the China Insurance Automotive Safety Index (C-IASI), while the ES8 and ET7 achieved five-star ratings from China NCAP. Additionally, NIO’s ES8, ET7, EL7, ET5, ET5T, and EL6 models received five-star safety ratings from Euro NCAP.
NIO introduced NIO Active Safety 2.0 in January 2024, featuring General Objects Warning and Assist (GOA) and All-Scenario Mis-Acceleration Intervention Function (MAI+). As of June 25, 2024, NIO’s NOP+ (Navigation and Orientation Plus) covered nearly 1.4 million kilometers of urban roads in China.
Creating a Sustainable Value Chain
NIO enhanced environmental and social sustainability through partnerships, conducting 433 NIO Partner Quality System (NPQS) audits and 229 sustainability audits in 2023. About 80% of parts value comes from partners in the Yangtze River Delta, with 40% from Anhui Province. NIO was listed as a “2023 Green Supply Chain Management Enterprise” by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
NIO organized over 7,000 community activities for 268,000 users in 2023, including nearly 4,000 welcome parties for new users. The company achieved an average annual user satisfaction score of 4.84/5.00. NIO models also received high customer satisfaction ratings, with the ES6 and ES8 winning awards in after-sales service surveys.
Caring for Employees
NIO fosters a diverse, inclusive workplace, attracting talent from 20 countries. In 2023, the company received 10 HR awards, conducted 55 leadership training sessions for 2,532 participants, and organized 447 professional training sessions for 48,148 participants. Employee activities covered various themes, enhancing team cohesion and well-being. NIO achieved 100% coverage for physical exams and safety training, and online training on business ethics and compliance.
Practicing Charitable Actions
In December 2023, NIO, NIO Users Trust, and NIO Users Foundation launched the “NIO Climate Action” initiative with China Charity Federation, planning to invest RMB 50 million over five years to combat climate change. In 2023, 14,897 volunteers participated in 172,472 hours of public welfare activities across 229 cities, including Europe. NIO’s Clean Parks initiative contributed to protecting 17 nature reserves worldwide.
