NIO and technology giant ZF are setting a new benchmark in the industry with the integration of steer-by-wire technology in the NIO ET9’s “SkyRide” chassis, marking a major step in the industrialization of software-defined vehicles.
The innovative system eliminates the traditional mechanical steering connection, offering a fully digital, customizable driving experience.
By dynamically adjusting the steering ratio based on speed, it enhances both maneuverability at low speeds and stability at high speeds, ensuring a precise, safe, and comfortable ride.

As part of NIO’s long-term strategy for the European market, the collaboration with German tech group ZF has led to the mass production of this advanced steering system.
Safety is a top priority, with redundant controls ensuring continued operation in case of failure, road vibrations filtered out for a smoother ride, and improved traction on slippery surfaces through precise digital control.
Developed in close partnership with ZF, the steer-by-wire system is a highlight of NIO’s European expansion efforts, supported by five R&D centers across the continent, including one in Oxford.
According to Danilo Teobaldi, Principal Chief Engineer at NIO, this breakthrough showcases NIO’s commitment to redefining the driving experience and leading innovation in smart EVs.
With steer-by-wire, NIO is pushing the boundaries of software-defined vehicles, enabling continuous upgrades through over-the-air updates and paving the way for future autonomous driving capabilities.
The ET9 is one of the world’s first production vehicles to feature this advanced steering system, reinforcing NIO’s position at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution.
