NIO, a global leader in smart electric vehicles, is advancing Europe’s shift towards sustainable energy with its innovative Power Swap technology. Initially designed to revolutionize electric vehicle (EV) charging, the technology is now contributing to energy storage and grid stability across the continent.

Hui Zhang, Vice President of NIO Europe, highlighted the dual purpose of NIO’s Power Swap Stations, which not only offer fast, fully automated battery swaps but also serve as decentralized energy storage units. “NIO’s Power Swap Stations represent a key element in the continent’s journey towards sustainable energy,” said Zhang.

NIO’s Power Swap technology, introduced to Europe in 2022, allows drivers to swap batteries in just three minutes, faster than conventional refueling.

With a flexible, “chargeable, swappable, and upgradeable” structure, the system offers drivers the option to upgrade their batteries for longer trips without vehicle modification. Each Power Swap Station (PSS Generation 3.0) can hold up to 21 batteries and complete up to 408 swaps per day.

In addition to transforming EV mobility, NIO’s swap stations play a significant role in stabilizing Europe’s power grid. Projects in Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Germany utilize these stations to manage renewable energy fluctuations and support grid stability through decentralized storage. In Germany, NIO is also involved in wholesale electricity trading to help reduce energy costs.

NIO plans to launch its first bi-directional Power Swap Station in Europe, allowing batteries to both receive and supply power to the grid, further enhancing grid services and supporting Europe’s green energy goals.

NIO’s efforts align with circular economy principles, as the decoupling of vehicle and battery life extends their use and allows for the repurposing of batteries for secondary energy storage applications, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
