Nissan begins production of the 2024 Qashqai at its Sunderland plant, featuring a bold new design and innovative e-POWER system, reinforcing its position as the top crossover in the market.

Nissan has launched the production of the revamped 2024 Qashqai at its Sunderland plant in the UK. This updated model, part of the UK’s highest-volume vehicle line, boasts a bold new design and cutting-edge technological upgrades to enhance the customer experience.

Nearly 18 years since the first Qashqai rolled off the line, this new version continues to lead the crossover segment, having sold over four million units across more than 100 countries.

The refreshed Qashqai, now electrified with Nissan’s unique e-POWER system, began production following a £30 million investment in the Sunderland plant, further bolstering Nissan’s £6 billion total investment in the UK.

The e-POWER system combines an electric motor with a gasoline engine to deliver an electric vehicle driving experience without the need for plug-in charging. This innovative powertrain, along with the vehicle’s new features, is expected to reach Nissan dealers across Europe and beyond in the coming weeks.

Adam Pennick, Nissan’s Vice President for Manufacturing in the UK, expressed pride in Sunderland being the home of the Qashqai, emphasizing the plant’s role in producing the leading crossover with a top-notch team. The Sunderland plant, which also produces the Nissan JUKE and all-electric Nissan LEAF, supports 7,000 jobs and another 30,000 in the UK supply chain.

Since the launch of its third generation in 2021, the Qashqai has sold over 350,000 units in Europe. The model’s 2022 introduction of the e-POWER system has seen more than 120,000 units on the roads, providing a unique driving experience where the wheels are driven exclusively by the electric motor.

The latest Qashqai retains its core appeal while incorporating new intuitive and convenient technologies. Upgrades include advanced driver assistance systems and the integration of Google built-in as part of the NissanConnect infotainment system, offering seamless interaction between the vehicle and the user’s digital life.

To accommodate the production of the updated Qashqai, Sunderland’s plant underwent several modifications. Investments were made in facilities for new panels, bumpers, paint colors, interior features, materials, and trim. Additionally, new production processes were introduced for assembling the vehicle’s electrified components.

Nissan’s commitment to an all-electric future is embodied in the EV36Zero vision, a blueprint integrating electric vehicle and battery manufacturing powered by renewable energy. This model, initiated in Sunderland, will guide future Nissan plants globally.

As part of this initiative, future all-electric versions of the Qashqai, JUKE, and LEAF are set to be produced in Sunderland, aligning with Nissan’s plan for a 100% electric passenger car lineup in Europe by 2030. This effort supports Nissan’s broader Ambition 2030 vision of becoming a sustainable company focused on creating a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.

The EV36Zero project and the production of the all-new Qashqai underscore Nissan’s dedication to sustainability and innovation in automotive manufacturing, with the Sunderland plant playing a crucial role in this transformative journey.
