In this series, we’re tackling common misconceptions about electric vehicles, starting with the idea that all EVs look the same. Steve Potter, Polestar’s Exterior Design Manager, believes this myth is outdated.
While conversations often revolve around the notion that modern cars, especially EVs, have lost their individuality, Potter points out that complaints about cars looking similar have existed for years.
Historically, before strict manufacturing and safety regulations, car designers had far more creative freedom. Today, factors like legislation and the need for aerodynamic efficiency — crucial for EV range — shape designs. But that doesn’t mean creativity is lost. “We face restrictions, but those challenges inspire innovation,” says Potter.

Take the Polestar 3, for example. It’s an SUV, but with a low nose and aggressive front design, coupled with innovative aero wings that channel airflow to maximize range, blending performance with distinctive looks.
The Polestar 4 pushes design boundaries even further, eliminating the rear windscreen for improved aerodynamics and introducing a panoramic sunroof, enhanced by cutting-edge rear-view camera technology.
Technology plays a huge role in Polestar’s design philosophy. Instead of seeing advancements like LiDar and camera systems as obstacles, Polestar integrates them into their design, making them key features, like the elegant frameless mirrors on the Polestar 3 and 4 that incorporate cameras.
As the automotive industry advances, with technologies like self-driving systems and better batteries on the horizon, design restrictions could ease. Potter believes this shift will grant designers more freedom than ever before, allowing them to bypass current design constraints and return to a more creative era.
Looking ahead, Potter suggests the next decade will revolutionize automotive design, breaking current clichés and embracing a more progressive and innovative future. Still think EVs all look the same? Potter argues that won’t be true for much longer.
