Sir Stirling Moss’ 1990 Mercedes-Benz 500SL, owned for 24 years by the racing legend, is up for auction at £40,000. This historic car also transported F1 star Valtteri Bottas.

Sir Stirling Moss’ old Merc is heading under the hammer for £40,000.

The 1990 Mercedes-Benz 500SL R129 was owned by the late, great motor racing driver for 24 years.

On 23 November 1990, the iconic driver registered the car with his famous ‘7 SM’ custom number plate.

Sir Stirling sadly died in April 2020, aged 90.

This particular vehicle is kitted out with a 5.0-litre V8 engine that generates a whopping 302 brake horsepower.

Today the car sits with just over 63,000 miles on the clock.

The magnificent motor is also equipped with an expanding roll-over bar, a fully electric hood, electric seats, mirrors, anti-lock brakes and a multi-link rear axle.

The car, which already boasts ownership from British motorsport royalty, has also transported another F1 icon.

Valtteri Bottas and his wife were conveyed in the motor in 2021 from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 HQ.

The historic automatic is now heading under the hammer on 24 August, as reported by Luxury Auto News.

Iconic Auctioneers, who are hosting the event described the car as: “The jewel of The Stuttgart Collection, supplied new to Sir Stirling Moss and famously conveyed Valtteri Bottas and his wife from the Mercedes-AMG Petrona F1 HQ in 2021.

“Sir Stirling’s personal requirements are documented in the history file that also contains all the car’s old MOTs from the first in 1993 and a copy of his book Great Drives in the Lakes and Dales in which this car is featured.

“In 2014, the current private registration “H7 SMX” was applied to the car, and is generously included in the sale.

“The car was thrust back into the limelight in 2021 when Mercedes Formula 1 driver, Valtteri Bottas, and his wife sat on the back of the car and conveyed to great fanfare from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 headquarters, coverage of which was extensive across social media and news outlets.

“Presented today with 63,724 miles on the odometer, at the time of cataloguing, H7 SMX comes complete with both a soft top, a hard top with stand and, of course, that priceless connection to one of the greatest racing drivers of all time.”

Sir Moss was regarded as the greatest driver next to win the F1 world championship.
