A modest Ford Escort has sold for over £50,000 – five times what it cost in the 80s.
The 1989 RS Turbo Series 2 has a top speed of just 128mph.
It takes 8.3 seconds for it to go from 0-60mph.

The bright red motor has hardly been driven by its three different owners in the last 36 years.
The Escort only has 5,673 miles on the clock – just 157 per year, or 13 a month, which is just over one per month.

The first owner’s wife drove it only occasionally for 18 years.
It was sold at auction for £50,625.
Brand new in 1989, it would have cost about £10,000.

In today’s money, taking into account inflation, that is £25,000, as reported by Luxury Auto News.
It was sold by Iconic Auctioneers in Warwick.

A spokesperson said: “Initially registered to the first owner’s company, the car was re-registered in his own name on the same day.
“Used sparingly by his wife until her passing in 2007 and thereafter dry stored until 2015, having covered some 5,000 miles.

“The car was consigned by the first owner in August of 2015 to Silverstone Auctions and sold successfully.
“Given a thorough going-over by the successful bidder, the car’s third registered keeper, recent works included a professional respray.

“Supplied to auction with a well-stamped service book, handbooks, receipts, photo album and historic MOTs, the most recent of which is valid until January 2025.

“Beautifully presented and perhaps the finest example available with just 5,673 recorded miles from new, we welcome any inspection.”
Auctioneer Rob Hubbard said: “The classic sale was a glorious celebration of the many forms a classic car can take in today’s marketplace.

“With cars from the 1980s and 1990s continuing to enjoy high demand in the market.”
The Escort was frequently the best-selling car in Britain during the 80s and 90s.

A total of more than 4.1 million of all generations were sold over a 33-year period.
