Mattia Binotto will assume the roles of Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer at Sauber Motorsport AG, as Audi restructures its future factory team’s management. This shift comes amid Audi’s full acquisition of Sauber Holding AG and the necessary realignment of control structures to prepare for its Formula 1 debut. Starting August 1, Binotto, the former head of Ferrari’s F1 team, will lead the Audi F1 project from its base in Hinwil.

“We are thrilled to have Mattia Binotto join our ambitious Formula 1 project,” said Gernot Döllner, CEO of AUDI AG. “His extensive experience, spanning over 25 years in Formula 1, will significantly contribute to Audi’s success.” Binotto, who holds a mechanical engineering degree from EPFL in Switzerland, began his career with Ferrari’s F1 test team in 1995. He held various roles, including chief engineer, manager of the engine department, and technical director, before becoming the team head of Scuderia Ferrari in 2019.

In his new position, Binotto will oversee the operational management and sporting success of the racing team. He will report directly to the Board of Directors of Sauber Motorsport AG. This appointment is part of a broader strategy to ensure the autonomy and independence of the Audi F1 project. Döllner emphasized the need for clear management structures, defined responsibilities, and efficient decision-making processes to bring the project up to F1 standards, allowing the team to act independently and swiftly.

As part of the restructuring, Oliver Hoffmann, the former Chairman of the Boards of Directors of all Sauber companies, and Andreas Seidl, the former CEO of Sauber Motorsport AG and Sauber Technologies AG, will be leaving the project. “I extend my gratitude to Oliver and Andreas for their crucial roles in establishing our entry into Formula 1 and their dedication to its preparation,” Döllner added.
