Lexus has unveiled a prototype of its next-generation Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) in Australia, showcasing cutting-edge safety technology designed to reduce road accident fatalities.
The demonstration took place during the ITS Australia Summit 2024 in Sydney, an event focused on protecting vulnerable road users like pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter riders.

Advancing Road Safety with C-ITS Technology
Over three days, Lexus conducted more than 150 test drives on Darling Island using two electric RZ 450e models and a hybrid RX 500h. These vehicles demonstrated how C-ITS enables seamless communication between cars, road infrastructure, and the broader network. The technology, powered by Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC), enhances hazard detection far beyond traditional radar and camera systems.
Enhanced Hazard Warnings and Communication
Key features of the system include:
- Pedestrian alerts: Cars receive early warnings about pedestrians hidden behind buildings and approaching crosswalks.
- Vehicle-to-vehicle communication: Alerts drivers to potential hazards, such as cars or bicycles approaching from blind spots or perpendicular streets.
- Infrastructure interaction: Notifies drivers of accidents, unexpected roadworks, or changes to speed limits well in advance.
- Traffic management: Controls traffic lights to prioritize emergency vehicles or improve flow.
By facilitating real-time communication, the system ensures safer overtaking maneuvers and better overall traffic coordination.
A Vision for Safer Roads
John Pappas, President of Lexus Australia, emphasized the brand’s commitment to safety:
“Eliminating road fatalities requires improving safety for all road users. Lexus is proud to collaborate with governments, industry, and tech companies to advance solutions that benefit the social, economic, and environmental outcomes for road users.”
Lexus has equipped its entire model lineup with Lexus Safety System+3 and continues to pioneer technologies aimed at making roads safer for everyone.
