Lexus and the innovative design studio Crafting Plastics are set to unveil an interactive, multi-sensory installation at Miami Art & Design Week 2024. Inspired by the Lexus LF-ZC prototype, the exhibit, titled “Liminal Cycles,” will be showcased on December 4 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami (ICA Miami) and will explore themes of advanced personalization and biomaterials in a luxurious context.
This marks another year of collaboration between Lexus and ICA Miami, highlighting the automaker’s close ties to contemporary art and design.
Founded by designers Vlasta Kubušová and Miroslav Král, Crafting Plastics is known for pioneering the use of biopolymers and their development of NUATAN, a fully renewable, biodegradable material.

The studio’s installation for Lexus builds on the concept of software-defined vehicles (SDVs), where software enhances the adaptability and personalization of vehicle features. The four-part exhibit will engage visitors through touch, sight, sound, and scent, the latter enriched by a bespoke Lexus fragrance created by scent studio DILO.
Heather Updegraff, General Manager of Lexus International Strategic Communications, praised Crafting Plastics’ groundbreaking work, noting how it pushes the boundaries of material and design innovation. In response, Kubušová expressed excitement about collaborating with a brand that shares their commitment to sustainability, aiming to highlight biomaterials in a luxurious setting that resonates with Lexus’ design ethos.
ICA Miami’s Artistic Director, Alex Gartenfeld, emphasized the museum’s dedication to sustainability and praised Lexus for spotlighting eco-conscious design.
In addition to the installation, a curated collection of limited-edition collectibles by top designers—including Germane Barnes, Suchi Reddy, T. Sakhi, and Michael Bennet (Studio Kër)—will be available for purchase at the event. DILO has also created a limited edition of scented candles, with proceeds supporting ICA Miami’s sustainability initiatives.
This collaboration is set to be a memorable fusion of design, innovation, and sustainability, reflecting Lexus and Crafting Plastics’ shared vision for a future of responsible luxury.
