Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has introduced a unique addition to its electric vehicle (EV) test facility in Coventry: a four-legged robotic guard dog named ‘Rover.’ The Boston Dynamics robot, equipped with advanced AI, plays a critical role in JLR’s electrification plans by monitoring the facility and ensuring smooth operations.
The luxury vehicle manufacturer aims to electrify all its brands, including Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar, by 2030.

Rover operates 24/7, patrolling the energy-dense test environment to identify operational issues early, allowing JLR engineers to focus on critical tasks.
By inspecting equipment, detecting wear, and using thermal sensors to evaluate battery temperatures, Rover helps avoid human error and ensures that development stays on track. The robotic dog even opens doors, climbs stairs, and uses advanced sensors to detect hazards like gas leaks, making it an invaluable asset at the facility.
JLR’s investment in Rover is part of the company’s broader £18 billion Reimagine strategy. Alongside Rover, JLR is trialing plasma cleaning robots to ensure the highest battery quality by removing microscopic particles from cells.
As JLR prepares for the launch of the Range Rover Electric and a new era for Jaguar, Rover’s role highlights the company’s focus on innovation and safety in its EV transformation.
Plans are now underway to deploy robotic quadrupeds across JLR’s global operations, including its Solihull plant, where the Jaguar brand will soon enter its all-electric future, starting with a 4-door GT priced from £100,000.
