Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is seeing rising demand for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), with global retail sales up by 29% in the first half of this fiscal year as more customers use PHEVs as a bridge to fully electric vehicles.
The Range Rover brand recorded a 47% increase in global PHEV sales, and Defender’s PHEV sales were up by 23%, highlighting a shift in customer preferences toward electrified options.

This follows a 59% year-over-year increase in JLR’s global PHEV sales in FY24, with new Range Rover PHEV sales nearly doubling over the same period. Mark Camilleri, JLR’s Director of Electrification Services, noted that PHEVs offer performance and environmental benefits, including zero emissions in pure electric mode, and help customers ease into electric ownership by offering the convenience of both home and public charging.
With its flexible modular longitudinal architecture (MLA), JLR will continue offering internal combustion engine (ICE), PHEV, and soon, battery electric vehicle (BEV) options for Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The Range Rover and Range Rover Sport PHEVs already provide a 70-mile pure electric range—well above the UK’s 20-mile average daily commute.
As JLR advances toward its goal of a carbon-neutral lineup by 2039, it plans to release a pure electric variant of each nameplate by 2030. Demand is already high for JLR’s upcoming fully electric Range Rover, with over 48,000 clients on the waiting list, marking the start of JLR’s zero-emission luxury vehicle lineup.
