IONNA, the electric vehicle charging network founded by eight major automakers—BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Stellantis, and Toyota—has begun construction on its first ‘Rechargery’ in Apex, North Carolina.

The facility, located in the heart of the town’s historic district, marks a significant milestone for both the company and the state, transforming a century-old gas station into a cutting-edge electric vehicle charging hub.

The new site, just a few miles from IONNA’s headquarters and customer experience lab, is designed to meet the needs of both local residents and long-distance travelers.

The facility will feature 10 covered charging bays, protected from weather and compatible with both CCS and NACS connectors, offering ultra-fast charging speeds of up to 400kW and 800+ volts. Drivers will also have access to a lounge with amenities such as coffee service, food, and Wi-Fi, as well as outdoor, pet-friendly spaces.

Apex, historically known as a rail town, is now seeing its transportation infrastructure evolve with IONNA’s investment. The project represents a symbolic return to the town’s roots, modernizing the site of one of its earliest gas stations to create the “Apex of charging” in what is now dubbed the “Peak of Good Living.”

In addition to this major development, IONNA has appointed Jackie Slope as its new Chief Technology Officer. Slope, who brings over 15 years of experience in customer-centric roles at high-profile venues such as Crypto.com Arena and Madison Square Garden, will oversee the deployment of IONNA’s hardware and software technologies, ensuring a seamless and elevated charging experience.

“I am excited to join the IONNA family,” Slope said. “Having spent my career focused on enhancing the customer experience, I look forward to innovating and elevating the charging experience in this new and exciting industry.”

IONNA plans to deploy over 30,000 ultra-fast charging points across the U.S. by 2030, making electric vehicle mobility more accessible and convenient for all drivers.
