Hyundai Motor Company’s XCIENT Fuel Cell electric heavy-duty trucks have achieved a significant milestone, surpassing a cumulative driving distance of 10 million kilometers in Swiss fleet usage.
This remarkable achievement underscores the long-term reliability and advanced technology of Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell systems.
Since their introduction to Switzerland in October 2020, these trucks have proven their dependability and effectiveness. Currently, 48 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks operate in Switzerland, each powered by two 90-kW fuel cell systems (totaling 180 kW) and a 350 kW e-motor, providing a range of over 400 kilometers.

This milestone not only highlights the robustness of Hyundai’s hydrogen technology but also marks a substantial environmental contribution. The XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks have significantly reduced carbon emissions, estimated to be equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of approximately 700,000 pine trees, or the creation of a pine forest covering 508 hectares (5 million square meters).
This reduction is particularly impactful when compared to a fleet of regular diesel trucks, which would have emitted about 6,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the same distance.
The trucks operate on ‘green hydrogen’, ensuring no carbon emissions during the production process and supporting the development of an eco-friendly hydrogen value chain in Europe.
This accomplishment also plays a crucial role in advancing hydrogen fuel cell system technology. Hyundai Motor intends to use data on mileage, hydrogen consumption, and fuel cell stack performance to further enhance its hydrogen technology, applying these improvements across various vehicle types.
Hyundai Motor’s commitment to hydrogen extends beyond vehicle production. The company actively supports and participates in the development of a comprehensive commercial hydrogen ecosystem, encompassing production, charging infrastructure, and hydrogen consumption. This effort is exemplified by the expansion of HTWO, Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell system brand, to cover the entire hydrogen value chain from production to utilization.
At the CES 2024, Hyundai announced the expansion of HTWO to accelerate the transition to a hydrogen society. In the U.S., Hyundai introduced its clean logistics business at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo 2024, highlighting key projects like the NorCAL ZERO Project, which deploys 30 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks in California for freight transport, and the Clean Logistics Project, aimed at reducing emissions at Hyundai’s production facility in Georgia.
Recognized for their reliability and eco-friendliness, the XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks are now deployed in 10 countries, including the U.S., Switzerland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Korea, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
