Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) recently celebrated 20 years of quality and performance testing at its California Proving Ground (CPG) in California City, marking two decades of innovation and vehicle development.

Since opening in 2005, the $80 million facility has tested over 5,000 Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles in extreme conditions to ensure durability, reliability, and safety.

Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung highlighted the proving ground’s vital role in advancing AI, robotics, electrification, and hydrogen technology, positioning Hyundai for the next wave of automotive innovation.

Spanning 4,500 acres in the Mojave Desert, the facility features a 6.4-mile oval track, a 2-million-square-foot Vehicle Dynamics Area, specialized road surfaces replicating U.S. highways, and various off-road and durability test loops.

Engineers conduct full vehicle evaluations, including ride and handling, Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) testing, and heat protection assessments. The site also includes fully equipped garages and a material-weathering facility to study UV degradation.

CPG is one of several HATCI facilities across the U.S., including its Michigan headquarters, a powertrain research lab in Chino, a design and engineering center in Irvine, and CRADLE in Silicon Valley, which focuses on next-generation mobility solutions.

Hyundai Motor Group, now the world’s third-largest automaker by sales, has invested over $20.5 billion in the U.S. since 2002 and supports more than 570,000 jobs nationwide.
