As part of its long-term vision, the Group has launched nine joint research projects in collaboration with IITs, covering key focus areas like battery cell development, battery management systems (BMS), energy density, durability, safety, and diagnostic technologies.

These efforts will also delve into new materials and components to innovate battery performance and design.

Strategic Leadership and Nationwide Collaboration

The Hyundai CoE will be guided by a Steering Committee co-chaired by EVP Chang Hwan Kim of Hyundai and Prof. Bijaya Ketan Panigrahi of IIT Delhi. The opening ceremony saw participation from top Hyundai leaders and key academic figures from IIT Delhi, Bombay, and Madras.

The CoE is part of Hyundai’s broader Future Technology Research Program, now expanded to include international institutions. Initially focused on Korean universities and professors abroad, the program now welcomes faculty from India’s top institutes, allowing them to propose independent research projects selected by Hyundai.

Currently, the Group is working with three IITs and around 30 professors, with plans to grow this network to 10 universities and 100 professors by the end of 2025. This expansion will include both IITs and other premier Indian institutions.

  • Policy roundtables with Indian government, industry, and academia

The Hyundai CoE marks the Group’s first academic-industry partnership in a growth economy and is expected to become a central hub for EV and mobility innovation. As India continues its push toward sustainable transportation, this initiative aligns with both national priorities and Hyundai’s global electrification goals.
