A unique hybrid 4×4, dubbed a “tank” for its ability to float and drive on water, has been spotted in the UK for the first time. Thomas Howarth, a sports car enthusiast and Instagram influencer (@horsepower_hunters), shared this jaw-dropping vehicle with his 447,000 followers, garnering over 59,000 views and 1,850 likes.
The 28-year-old Londoner, known for showcasing exotic cars, previously made headlines after spotting celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay driving a rare £1M Aston Martin. Now, Howarth has discovered a 4×4 that not only turns like a tank but also floats on water for up to 30 minutes.
This vehicle, called the Yangwang U8, is from the luxury Chinese manufacturer BYD and weighs up to 3.5 tons.

“It’s the first time it [the car] has been seen in the UK,” Thomas, a photographer, told Luxury Auto News. “It’s something unusual and different.” In a clip shared on social media, the vehicle can be seen spinning smoothly, almost gliding across the ground.
He captioned the post: “I definitely need a car that can turn like this!” While some users were impressed, others were less enthusiastic. Comments ranged from concerns about tire wear to skepticism about the vehicle’s durability.
“Tyre wear has left the chat,”
one person remarked. Another added, “Can’t imagine what issues this will cause after a year.” Some were more blunt, with comments like
“That is heinous” and “Those poor tyres.”
Despite mixed reactions, the Yangwang U8’s luxurious features and impressive capabilities have caused quite a stir. Inspired by the new Land Rover Defender, the car is equipped with electric motors and a 2.0-liter petrol generator battery, making it a hybrid. The interior boasts Nappa leather and wood finishes, enhancing its luxury appeal.
However, the vehicle is not yet available in the UK market and does not currently meet the regulations to be driven on UK roads. In China, the Yangwang U8 is priced from £120,000, but it is expected to be more expensive if and when it becomes available in the UK.
Thomas Howarth continues to captivate his audience with rare and extraordinary vehicles, and the Yangwang U8 is no exception. This hybrid 4×4, with its tank-like turning ability and semi-amphibious features, represents a fascinating blend of innovation and luxury.
