General Motors (GM) has announced a strategic shift in its autonomous driving approach, focusing on advancing driver assistance technologies like Super Cruise while scaling back on robotaxi development. GM’s Super Cruise, a hands-free, eyes-on driving system, is already in use across 20+ vehicle models, logging over 10 million miles monthly.

As part of this realignment, GM will integrate Cruise LLC’s technical teams with its own, consolidating efforts to accelerate the development of autonomous personal vehicles. The decision reflects GM’s capital-efficient priorities, citing the challenges and competition in scaling robotaxi operations.

GM plans to acquire nearly all remaining shares of Cruise, increasing its ownership from 90% to over 97%. The restructuring, set for completion in early 2025, is expected to reduce annual spending by more than $1 billion.

Chair and CEO Mary Barra emphasized GM’s commitment to customer-centric innovation, leveraging its manufacturing scale and trusted brands to enhance transportation’s future.

Dave Richardson, Senior VP of Software and Services Engineering, highlighted the potential of autonomy to boost safety, traffic flow, accessibility, and reduce driver stress.

GM will host a conference call featuring Barra and other executives to discuss the plan. Details and a replay will be available on the GM Investor Relations website.

This move underscores GM’s dedication to pioneering safer, smarter vehicles while aligning with its vision for an all-electric and autonomous future.
