General Motors has entered into a 15-year renewable energy purchase agreement with NorthStar Clean Energy to power three of its assembly plants. The energy will come from NorthStar’s 180-megawatt Newport Solar project in Newport, Arkansas, which will supply electricity to GM’s Lansing Delta Township and Lansing Grand River Assembly plants in Michigan, as well as the Wentzville Assembly site in Missouri.
This agreement is GM’s largest renewable energy deal to date, marking a significant step toward its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2040. The Newport Solar project can generate enough electricity to power 30,000 homes annually.

“This expansion of our renewable electricity portfolio is key to reducing our carbon footprint and advancing sustainability,” said Rob Threlkeld, GM’s Director of Global Energy Strategy.
With this deal, GM now has agreements in place with 17 renewable energy plants across 11 states, making it the automotive industry’s largest buyer of renewable power by capacity.
General Motors is committed to an all-electric future, driven by the Ultium battery platform, and sells vehicles under several brands, including Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac. More information can be found at gm.com.
