GM Defense Canada, a branch of GM Defense, has secured a C$35.8 million contract with the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to supply 90 light tactical vehicles (LTVs), with an option for an additional 18 LTVs. This contract also includes the provision of training, technical manuals, and other vehicle components sourced from Canadian companies.
Under this agreement, GM Defense Canada will supply both nine-passenger LTVs and a new utility variant based on a design already in use by the U.S. Army. These LTVs will support the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Multinational Battlegroup in Latvia, offering soldiers increased speed, range, and safety in challenging terrains.

Steve duMont, president of GM Defense, emphasized the importance of this contract in meeting the urgent operational needs of the CAF. “We see this contract as the start of a long-term strategic partnership with the Canadian Armed Forces, enhancing tactical mobility for soldiers now and in the future. As we expand our reach into Canada and other allied nations, we will continue to leverage General Motors’ vast resources to provide our global defense and government customers with the best capabilities to accomplish their missions,” duMont stated.
Kristian Aquilina, president and managing director of GM Canada, highlighted the significance of this contract as an example of GM’s contributions to Canada. “From supplying light tactical vehicles through GM Defense Canada to the support of our Canadian Technical Centre in developing these vehicles, we are proud that GM can also make a significant impact in the defense sector,” Aquilina said.
The light tactical vehicles from GM Defense Canada are based on the mid-size architecture of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, utilizing a high percentage of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) parts, including Chevrolet Performance components for enhanced off-road capabilities. These agile vehicles, weighing less than 5000 pounds (2232 kilograms), are designed for air transportability and easy maintenance, with parts accessible through GM’s global supply chain. They also feature active and passive safety measures to meet the CAF’s performance and safety requirements.
