In automotive lore, few vehicles match the legacy of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, a hypercar that shattered expectations when it debuted in 2005.

But the Veyron wasn’t born overnight—it was the culmination of a visionary journey led by Ferdinand Piëch, then-chairman of the Volkswagen Group, who imagined a road car with unprecedented performance and luxury.

His initial idea, inspired during a train ride in Japan, centered on a radical W18 engine, sparking a series of concept cars between 1998 and 1999 that shaped Bugatti’s modern rebirth.

The journey began with the EB 118, unveiled at the 1998 Paris Motor Show. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, it featured a front-mounted W18 engine and all-wheel drive in a grand tourer format.

Inside, it channeled Art Deco elegance, blending innovation with craftsmanship. This was followed by the EB 218 in 1999—a luxury saloon evolution of the EB 118, demonstrating how Bugatti’s bold engineering could extend into ultra-luxury sedan territory.

A significant pivot came with the EB 18/3 Chiron, revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1999. Designed by Fabrizio Giugiaro, it repositioned the W18 engine mid-ship in a focused, two-seat supercar layout—marking Bugatti’s shift toward pure performance.

One month later, the EB 18/4 Veyron debuted in Tokyo. With styling by Jozef Kabaň under VW design chief Hartmut Warkuß, this mid-engine concept more closely resembled the eventual production Veyron.
