When we see a car on the road, it’s easy to think of it as just a sleek box with wheels that simply works. But a car is much more than its appearance—it’s a finely-tuned machine where even the simplest components, like rubber, are crucial. For Polestar 5, Vehicle Dynamics Lead Chris Baguley reveals the intricate work behind perfecting essentials like tyres and suspension, elements that directly affect how the car feels on the road.

“Not all tyres are made equal,” says Baguley. They’re not just another part; tyres are the primary link between car and road, impacting everything from handling to safety.

Each tyre’s material composition affects its grip, lifespan, and performance across temperatures. For the Polestar 5, Baguley’s team partnered with Michelin to create a bespoke tyre, marked with “POL,” signifying it’s uniquely engineered for Polestar.

Unlike off-the-shelf tyres, these are meticulously crafted with input on construction, materials, and manufacturing to suit Polestar’s specific handling and performance needs.

Developing tyres for Polestar 5 wasn’t a quick process. Since the car is built on a new, proprietary chassis, Baguley and his team had no previous model to reference, requiring extensive testing and refinement.

They start with virtual prototypes before collaborating with Michelin to bring these specifications to life in the physical world, ensuring each iteration aligns with Polestar’s DNA for handling, comfort, and responsiveness.

Suspension also plays a significant role in Polestar 5’s performance. The Vehicle Dynamics team collaborates with damper suppliers and uses in-house tools to tune each component for optimal comfort and responsiveness.

Every aspect—from steering response to ride plushness—is tested and iterated until it aligns with the desired feel. “It’s a subjective, iterative process,” Baguley says, explaining that every tweak brings the car closer to a refined driving experience.

Throughout development, Baguley’s team continually tests and refines specs to ensure they capture the core Polestar identity. “We’re not left alone,” he explains, as management regularly checks in to confirm the car’s dynamics meet expectations.

This ongoing process has shaped Polestar 5 since its concept phase in 2018, with full development starting in 2020, building a foundation that will influence future models.

When Polestar 5 hits the roads, Baguley hopes drivers will not only see its stylish design but also feel the depth of engineering dedicated to crafting the ultimate driving experience.
