When you think of any performance car, certain attributes usually come to mind: exceptional driving experience, stunning design, and a luxurious interior. The Polestar 5 embodies all these qualities.

However, the Polestar 5 transcends these expectations. It represents the culmination of everything learned so far, embodying the ultimate expression of what a Polestar vehicle should be. Central to this is an unwavering commitment to safety. The goal is for the Polestar 5 to earn its place in the Scandinavian automotive safety hall of fame.

This dedication to safety has led to innovative features rarely seen in its segment. For example, the Polestar 5 includes a far-side impact airbag, providing additional safety levels not typically found in cars with sports seats.

During a critical side pole test, as part of the Concept to Car series, Senior Engineering Manager Helen Mossop and her safety team demonstrated the Polestar 5’s advanced safety features. This test simulates the scenario of a car impacting a tree on its side, a stringent assessment of any vehicle’s safety capabilities.

In the test, the Polestar 5 is propelled sideways at 32 km/h into a rigid, narrow pole. Advanced biofidelic side impact dummies are used to assess the impact. The Polestar 5’s unique safety feature, the far-side airbag, significantly enhances protection during such impacts.

Given that a quarter of all crashes are side impacts, and nearly half of occupant injuries occur on the side opposite the impact, this airbag is crucial. It deploys from the side of the sports seats, forming a protective barrier that prevents occupants from colliding with each other during a crash, effectively mitigating head injuries.

For Helen’s team, this test is just one of many steps in the extensive safety development process for the Polestar 5. The vehicle is expected to undergo several hundred safety tests before it becomes available to consumers. These tests are integral to ensuring that the Polestar 5 offers an experience where safety and performance coexist seamlessly, rather than compromising one another.
