Between 1966 and 1969, Ford famously defeated Ferrari with four consecutive overall wins at Le Mans, an achievement immortalized in racing lore.

The company later secured class victories with the Ford GT in 2016 and the Mustang GT3 more recently. Now, Ford is setting its sights on overall victory once again.

A New Era of Performance Racing

Bill Ford, Executive Chair of Ford Motor Company, emphasized the brand’s deep connection to Le Mans. “When we race, we race to win. Le Mans is where we took on Ferrari and won in the ’60s, and where we returned 50 years later to beat them again. Now, we are ready to challenge the world once more and ‘go like hell!’”

The move reinforces FIA WEC’s growing status, with at least ten major manufacturers expected to compete in the championship’s top tier in 2027.

“Ford has been synonymous with success both on and off the track for decades,” said FIA WEC CEO Frédéric Lequien. “Their return is a testament to the strength and momentum of endurance racing.”

Reviving an Iconic Rivalry

Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, welcomed Ford’s return, calling it “wonderful news” for Le Mans. “Ford does not compete to finish second. The renewal of its historic battle with Ferrari is an exciting prospect.”

With endurance racing in the midst of a golden era, Ford’s comeback promises to deliver high-stakes competition, technological innovation, and a thrilling chapter in the ongoing saga of motorsport’s greatest endurance race.
