One winter night, Deputy Ben Kunde was dispatched to assist a civilian whose vehicle had slid off an icy road. While waiting for a tow truck, Kunde witnessed another vehicle speeding towards him, unable to stop on the slick road.

The vehicle crashed into his police SUV, but Kunde was unharmed and able to call for help. At the same time, his vehicle’s Ford Pro Telematics system automatically sent a crash alert to dispatch, notifying them immediately.
Ford Pro Telematics provides real-time vehicle data, including crash notifications, via a dashboard accessible to fleet managers like Jenna Shelley. This feature is crucial, especially in remote areas where officers might face delays in response times or poor cell service. For Porter, the system is essential, helping cover Dane County’s 1,200-square-mile area.
Shelley finds the crash alerts invaluable but also relies on the system to track vehicle maintenance. Before Telematics, data was collected manually, but now she can monitor engine diagnostics, tire pressure, and upcoming maintenance needs in real time.
This proactive approach keeps vehicles in top condition, reducing downtime and improving officer safety.
The system has revolutionized how the department manages its fleet, with automatic maintenance scheduling and service tracking. Shelley’s focus is on minimizing risks by ensuring vehicles are always ready for duty, adding an extra layer of safety for officers on the road.
