The first Shelby 289 Cobra ever made is set to sell for £1.1 million at auction. This vintage car, built just over 60 years ago, has driven only 27,200 miles over the last six decades, averaging just 453 miles per year or 1.2 miles per day.
The classic white open-top vehicle boasts an impressive top speed of 150 mph. It is in remarkable condition and is hailed as a “remarkable testament to automotive history,” retaining all its original features and documents. With the chassis number CSX 2044, this Cobra has had just three careful owners.

RM Sotheby’s will auction the car in Phoenix, Arizona, US, on January 25. A spokesperson for the auction house commented, “CSX 2044, the first 289 Cobra, stands as a remarkable testament to automotive history with its preservation of original features and meticulous documentation, making it likely the most obsessively documented Cobra on the planet.
Featured in nearly every significant catalogue of Shelby marque history, it has had just three fastidious owners since new, previously owned by the preeminent Shelby collector Lynn Park.”
They added, “Currently indicating just shy of 27,200 miles at the time of cataloguing, this Cobra is still powered by its numbers-matching 289 engine. An incredible prize of distinct, irreproachable significance, CSX 2044 is a reflection of its owners and remains a benchmark reference car.
Dr. Horn’s prized possession allows for a blast into the hills on a cool Saturday evening, looking and driving just as it did 50 years ago, highlighting its unique originality and drivability. In a class of its own, CSX 2044 is, and will forever be, the first and only 289 Cobra of its kind.”
The Shelby 289 Cobra has a sale estimate of between £945,000 and £1.1 million.
