A Tribute to Mefistofele

Under the patronage of Turin 2024 Capital of Business Culture and supported by the National Automobile Museum of Turin (MAUTO), the celebrations will kick off with a conference titled “The Mefistofele and record-breaking cars with aero engines.” Industry experts, academics, and notable figures will discuss the significance of this extraordinary vehicle and its pioneering design.

The three-day event will include a special exhibition showcasing the Mefistofele, along with guided tours and activities for families and children. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the car’s fascinating history and the innovative spirit of its creator, Ernest Eldridge.

The Legend of Mefistofele

Eldridge, a motor racing enthusiast, purchased a 1908 Fiat SB4 race car and modified it with a Fiat A12 aircraft engine to create a record-breaking vehicle. The press nicknamed the car “Mefistofele” due to its exceptional performance and dramatic presence.

On July 12, 1924, Mefistofele set a world speed record in Arpajon, France, reaching 234.98 km/h. Eldridge continued to break records in 1925 at Montlhery, with speeds exceeding 200 km/h over 5 and 10 km, and achieving 206 km/h over 5 miles.

In 1969, Giovanni Agnelli acquired Mefistofele from Eldridge’s heirs. Today, the car is preserved at the Centro Storico FIAT, having been meticulously restored to perfect working order.
