Ford’s legacy as a trusted partner for law enforcement spans over a century, beginning in 1915 when the Oakland, California Police Force standardized its fleet with Ford vehicles.
By 1950, Ford introduced the first police package, offering enhanced power, durability, and safety features tailored for rigorous police use. This package quickly gained popularity, exemplified by the NYPD’s record-breaking order of 430 Ford vehicles.
The iconic Interceptor name debuted in 1954, linked to Ford’s high-performance 125-horsepower V-8 engine offered in the police package two years earlier.

By 1961, 58% of police cars in the U.S.’s largest cities were Fords. The Ford Mustang joined the force in 1982, celebrated for its agility and acceleration with an ad campaign boasting, “This Ford Chases Porsches for a living.”
The 1983 LTD Crown Victoria, equipped with a powerful 5.8-liter V8, reinforced Ford’s dominance in law enforcement vehicles.
The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, introduced as its own model in 1992, became the top choice for decades, commanding 85% of the police pursuit market by 1998. Though retired in 2012, it paved the way for next-generation Police Interceptors.
Ford’s innovation continued with the 2013 Police Interceptor sedan and utility, featuring all-wheel drive and advanced safety systems like BLIS and cross-traffic alert. In 2017, Ford introduced the first pursuit-rated hybrid police car and pickup, followed by the 2020 hybrid Police Interceptor Utility.
In August 2024, Ford launched its 2025 Police Interceptor Utility, reaffirming its commitment to law enforcement with cutting-edge features and unmatched reliability, ensuring its place as a leader in police vehicles for the future.
