A classic 1990s Ferrari F40, which has averaged less than a mile a day over the past 34 years, is poised to sell for an impressive £2 million. Known for its iconic rectangular-shaped rear spoiler, this red supercar boasts a top speed of 229 mph and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds. At the time of its release, it was the fastest road car in the world and originally cost £300,000.

The Ferrari F40, with its remarkable pedigree, has been owned by notable figures including football legend Diego Maradona, opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, and F1 drivers Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost.

This particular F40 has had only two careful owners over its lifetime, accumulating just 11,500 miles since it was manufactured in 1990, with only 4,000 of those miles in the past 20 years. This equates to an average of just 338 miles per year, 28 miles per month, or roughly 0.92 miles a day.

One of only 213 US-specification models ever produced, this meticulously preserved Ferrari is being sold in a private sale by RM Sotheby’s in Los Angeles, California. The car’s estimated selling price of £2 million reflects a significant increase from its original price, underlining its value as a collector’s item.

A spokesperson from the auction house highlighted the Ferrari F40’s significance: “The gold standard of supercars for the 1980s, the Ferrari F40 took the automotive world to new heights, breaking the 200 mph barrier in a road-legal automobile for the first time. The last model to be overseen by Enzo before his passing, the F40 represented the end of an era for the fabled manufacturer.”

Chassis number 86420 was built in September 1990 and delivered to its first owner in Florida in December of that year. The current owner acquired the car nearly twenty years ago from California and has kept it in Texas. Despite its minimal recent use, resulting in a need for some maintenance, the car remains highly desirable among collectors.

The F40 comes with a complete set of service invoices, detailing a timing belt change in 2007, an oil change at Ferrari of Houston in 2010, and further work in 2016, including a clutch replacement, seat refinishing, air conditioning system refresh, and engine bay detailing.

“Remaining mostly in static storage in the last few years, the car will require service work before being driven and enjoyed at its fullest,” the auction house noted.
