BMW Group has launched the Aeroacoustics and Electric Drive Center (AEC) at its Research and Innovation Center (FIZ) in Munich, replacing its 40-year-old wind tunnel.
The AEC features a groundbreaking vertical acoustic wind tunnel—the largest and quietest globally—with noise levels as low as 54.3 dB(A) at 140 km/h, comparable to a quiet conversation.
Designed for precision testing, the wind tunnel enables realistic simulations of headwind and rolling noises at speeds up to 250 km/h.

Advanced tools like a 216-microphone acoustic camera and laser vibrometry system ensure unparalleled accuracy, while flexible modules allow rapid reconfigurations for efficient testing of vehicle aerodynamics and acoustics.
Daniel Böttger, BMW’s Head of Complete Vehicle Development, emphasized the focus on premium acoustics for electric vehicles, while Dr. Nicole Haft-Zboril, Head of BMW Group Real Estate Management, highlighted lean construction practices in delivering this innovative facility.
The center also houses workshops for developing prototypes of high-voltage batteries and inverters, crucial for BMW’s electric mobility advancements. With multifunctional spaces designed for adaptability, the AEC strengthens BMW’s position in shaping the future of quiet, sustainable mobility.
