The BMW Group’s vehicle plant in Regensburg has been awarded the prestigious title of “Factory of the Year” 2024 in the category of “excellent large-series assembly.”
This recognition, part of one of Germany’s most esteemed industrial competitions, highlights the plant’s achievements in innovation, flexibility, and its use of advanced digital tools, including AI, to enhance production efficiency and quality.
Operating as one of over 30 BMW production sites globally, the Regensburg facility produces up to 1,400 BMW X1 and X2 models each workday, destined for customers worldwide.

Its flexible manufacturing line accommodates various drive trains, from internal combustion engines to plug-in hybrids and fully-electric vehicles, underscoring the plant’s adaptability in meeting modern automotive demands.
Judges from Kearney and Produktion magazine commended the plant’s “innovative strength and dynamism” in transitioning to BMW’s iFactory model. Daniel Stengel of Kearney praised both the facility’s setup and its workforce, calling their flexibility “exemplary and an inspiration for successful production in Germany.”
Armin Ebner, head of BMW Plant Regensburg, expressed pride in the team’s achievement: “Being named ‘Factory of the Year’ is a significant milestone and a testament to our team’s dedication to quality and performance.”
The facility also impressed judges with its integration of cutting-edge digital tools, including AI, which boosts productivity and operational resilience. Winners of the award were selected through a rigorous two-stage process, involving key performance data and on-site audits by an expert panel.
The award ceremony will take place during the “Factory of the Year” congress in spring 2025.
The Regensburg plant has been a key BMW production site since 1986 and is a major employer in the region, with a workforce of around 9,250, including more than 300 apprentices. High-voltage batteries for electric models are produced nearby, and the Wackersdorf Innovation Park, part of the Regensburg site, handles cockpit production and supplies parts for overseas plants.
