BMW Group has introduced two hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks as part of the European H2Haul project, testing zero-emission freight transport.
These IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell trucks will operate between Leipzig, Landsberg, and Nuremberg, assessing their practicality for long-haul logistics. To support the initiative, new hydrogen refuelling stations are being built in Leipzig and Hormersdorf.

Funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, H2Haul includes 16 hydrogen trucks across Europe. BMW’s findings will contribute to the commercialisation of fuel cell trucks, highlighting their potential for decarbonising freight transport.
The trucks offer quick refuelling times and extended range, making them a viable complement to BMW’s existing electric truck fleet.

BMW Group is also involved in HyCET, a project testing hydrogen combustion engine trucks alongside fuel cell vehicles.
These trucks, classified as zero-emission under EU regulations, will share BMW’s logistics routes and refuelling stations, helping to determine the optimal applications for each technology.

The Leipzig plant remains a pioneer in hydrogen logistics, operating one of Europe’s largest fuel cell-powered industrial truck fleets. The plant also leads in hydrogen-powered production, with bivalent burners in its paintshop reducing reliance on natural gas.

Looking ahead, BMW plans to launch its first hydrogen-powered production model in 2028, integrating fuel cell technology into its existing vehicle lineup, reinforcing hydrogen’s role alongside battery electric and hybrid powertrains.
