Bentley Edition 8 Models: Farewell to the V-8 Era

A Fond Farewell to the V-8 Engine

Change can be hard to accept, especially when it comes to saying goodbye to beloved high-cylinder count engines like Bentley’s W-12 and V-8.

Over the past few decades, Bentley has sold more than 53,000 examples of its hand-built V-8 engines since the latest generation was introduced in 2012.

Hybrid V-8 to Succeed the W-12

Interestingly, Bentley is keeping a version of the V-8 alive with its newly-announced range-topping hybrid V-8 powertrain. This setup, which details are yet to come, will replace the W-12 powertrain and become the most powerful powertrain Bentley has ever developed, boasting around 740 horsepower. However, the Continental GT, GTC, and Flying Spur models will soon lose the non-hybrid, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. The Edition 8 versions will be some of the last to feature this engine. It’s uncertain when or if Bentley plans to introduce the hybrid V-8 setup to these models.

Continued Use in Bentayga SUV

Bentley has clarified that the current 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 setup will continue to be available in the Bentayga SUV range for the foreseeable future. The automaker also offers hybrid, turbocharged V-6 powertrains in some models, such as the Bentayga and Flying Spur, which are in high demand.
